This Saturday night, Western Pennsylvania witnesses its first-ever women’s world boxing championship. Mary Casamassa takes on Olivia Gerula in a fiery showdown for the vacant WIBA Super Middleweight World title, hosted at the Steamfitters 449 Union Hall.
Derek Gionta, the brains behind the night, shared his enthusiasm about bringing such a significant bout to Pittsburgh, acknowledging the rising tide of female boxing and the fierce competitors elevating the sport.
Casamassa, a 24-year-old Pittsburgh native, eyes history, aiming to join Jill Emery as one of Pittsburgh’s female world boxing champions. On the flip side, Gerula, a seasoned warrior from Canada, brings a wealth of experience to the ring, having tangled with some of the sport’s most respected names.
“I’m excited to hold a fight of this magnitude here in Pittsburgh for the first time,” promoter Derek Gionta said. “Female boxing is gaining popularity and there are a number of phenomenal female fighters out there to thank for that.
“Olivia Gerula is battle tested and she recently went eight rounds with a very solid boxer, Olivia Curry. Mary will be at her best and we expect the same from Olivia.”
