Skye Nicolson Primed For World Title Shot In Australia

Australian boxing’s shining beacon, Skye Nicolson, is  eyeing a World Title fight on her home turf this year. With her gloves set on glory, the Interim WBC World Champion has shifted her focus from chasing a fight with Amanda Serrano to squaring off against Denmark’s Sarah Mahfoud for the full World Title. This pivot follows Serrano’s vacating of the title last month.

Nicolson, a Commonwealth Gold medallist and Olympian, remains undefeated in her professional journey, which began in March 2022. The year 2023 was a defining one for her, as she claimed four significant victories across the globe – in New York, Cardiff, Tijuana, and Dublin. Her 2023 campaign kickstarted with a win over Spain’s Tania Alvarez in New York, clinching the WBC Silver Featherweight Title. She continued her winning streak in Cardiff against Peru’s Linda Laura Lecca.

Her boxing finesse was on full display when she secured the Interim Featherweight World Title in Mexico, defeating Argentina’s Maribel Perez. Nicolson wrapped up the year with a bang, notching her first stoppage win against Sweden’s Lucy Wildheart in Ireland, on the undercard of the Cameron vs. Taylor 2 fight.

At 28, Nicolson has become the trailblazer for female boxing in Australia. Speaking at a media event in Brisbane, the former amateur standout expressed her eagerness to win a full World Title in Australia, ideally in Brisbane. Her aspiration is to make this dream a reality in front of her supportive family and friends.

Nicolson, known for her sharp southpaw style, is not one to shy away from challenges. She remains undaunted by Mahfoud, acknowledging her opponent’s skill but confident in her own abilities. She remarked on Mahfoud’s previous performance against Serrano, confidently stating that Mahfoud wouldn’t fare as well against her. Nicolson believes in her strength, especially when faced with formidable opponents, asserting that the tougher the fight, the more impressive she becomes in the ring.

This potential homecoming fight for Nicolson not only marks a significant step in her career but also a pivotal moment for Australian women’s boxing, as she stands on the brink of turning her World Title dreams into reality.
