Hall-of-Famer Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (24-6-2, 7 KOs) is set to continue her remarkable comeback against Josefina Vega (9-5, 4 KOs) in an 8-round lightweight bout this Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The fight will be the co-feature to Chordale Booker’s WBC US super welterweight title defense against Nicolas Hernandez on the CES Boxing’s “Summer Heat 2023” show.

A Return After 8-Year Layoff

This will mark Clampitt’s 5th bout since coming out of retirement in 2021 following an 8-year hiatus from the sport. The Warwick, Rhode Island resident initially retired after an injury in a TKO loss to Holly Holm in 2010 and left boxing in 2013 to raise her family and explore other interests.

“I had 2 young children and training with toddlers was pretty much impossible,” Clampitt reflects, discussing the challenges that led to her retirement. But the love for the sport was never lost. The resurgence of female boxing led by Irish superstar Katie Taylor rekindled Clampitt’s ambition to return to the ring.

A Champion’s Resume

During her prime, Clampitt captured 4 major world titles across 2 weight classes. Her decision to leave boxing in 2013 with a 21-5-1 record was well-earned, having fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a world champion multiple times.

However, her passion for the sport and the evolution of female boxing, including fair compensation and headlining major events, drew her back to the ring.

A Surprise Hall of Fame Nomination

Amusingly, Clampitt was unaware that she was being considered for the International Boxing Hall of Fame due to her retirement of more than 5 years. The nomination came as a pleasant surprise and reassurance for her comeback.

A Pioneer of Female Boxing

Throughout her career, Clampitt witnessed the transformation of women’s boxing. From her pro debut in 2000 to the present, she’s seen women’s boxing grow from reluctance to include women in amateur shows to headlining at Madison Square Garden.

Promoter Jimmy Burchfield Sr. played a significant role in Clampitt’s career and in elevating female boxing. His belief in Clampitt led to opportunities that allowed her to climb the ranks and win titles in the lightweight and super lightweight divisions.

Evolving Style and Longevity

The years away from boxing have allowed Clampitt’s style to evolve. From a mobile boxer to a more powerful inside fighter, her physical strength has improved. The long break also allowed her hands to heal, ensuring her longevity in the sport.

Upcoming Bout with Josefina Vega

Facing Vega, a veteran of the sport since 2012, Clampitt plans to adapt to whatever comes her way. With limited information on her opponent, her team has prepared for various scenarios, whether it requires boxing or being more aggressive.

Goals and Motivation

At 47, Clampitt takes her comeback one fight at a time. While aiming for a 5th world title, she emphasizes the importance of fair compensation in today’s women’s boxing economy.

“I’ve had so many people tell me ‘no’ during my career that I want to prove them wrong. While I don’t do it for the money, I deserve to be compensated adequately for what I’ve done. I’m still motivated, still healthy, and I’m going to keep going as long as I can,” says Clampitt.
