Emiliano Fernando Vargas is set to light up the boxing ring, following in the legendary steps of his father. On Friday, September 15, Vargas makes his inaugural appearance on ESPN at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. This comes almost two decades after his father, Fernando Vargas, headlined a bout at the very same venue.

The fresh-faced Vargas, recently scoring an impressive second-round victory over Jorge Luis Marquez Alvarado at Desert Diamond Arena, is gearing up for a six-round bout. Though his opponent is yet to be decided, the fight is creating a buzz, given Vargas’ recent triumphs. This bout serves as the curtain-raiser for a television triple-header, crowned by the IBF featherweight world title match between the reigning champ, Luis Alberto “El Venado” Lopez, and Joet Gonzalez, who’s already had two shots at world titles.

Adding flavor to this high-stakes night is the 10-round junior middleweight clash featuring the Puerto Rican prodigy, Xander Zayas, as he locks horns with Mexico’s Roberto Valenzuela Jr. This trio of tantalizing contests promises a treat for boxing enthusiasts, with live broadcasts across ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+ from 10 p.m. ET.

With Top Rank leading the promotions, fans can secure their tickets via Ticketmaster.com to witness the action firsthand.

Emiliano, with a perfect record of six wins and five by knockout since turning professional last May, has been a force to reckon with. His signing with Top Rank later that year propelled his career forward. Earning his nickname “El General”, he put up a stellar performance at his home turf in Las Vegas on the Devin Haney-Vasiliy Lomachenko undercard, sending Rafael Jasso packing in just two rounds. Notably, all his knockout wins have been swift, finishing opponents in the initial two rounds. This upcoming bout will be a landmark for the 19-year-old, as he ventures into a six-round contest for the first time.

Reflecting on his journey and the upcoming bout, Vargas expressed gratitude, saying, “I’m indebted to Top Rank and my crew for this golden chance to debut on ESPN amidst such a stellar lineup in Corpus Christi.” Drawing inspiration from his lineage, he added, “Wearing the Vargas name is a matter of pride. I’m geared up to emulate my dad’s triumph at the American Bank Center, which still resonates after nearly two decades.”
