Alyssa Mendoza from Caldwell, Idaho, soared through yet another battle at the 2024 Olympic Games World Qualifying Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy, securing her third triumph of the event, notably her second victory through Referee Stopped Contest (RSC).
In a compelling opening round against Morocco’s Nisrine Amine, Mendoza showcased her dominance, delivering the first of three standing eight counts mid-round, followed by a second from the referee with 45 seconds to spare.
With the victory within grasp and her corner’s encouragement ringing in her ears, Mendoza maintained her aggressive advance, driving her opponent to the brink as the final eight count commenced at the sound of the bell, culminating in the bout’s conclusion.
Post-victory, an elated Mendoza shared, “We clinched another first-round stoppage tonight. We’re advancing. All thanks to God for his blessings.”
Mendoza’s next challenge will be against Jin Hyejeong of Korea come Sunday.
On the same card, Robby “Rahim” Gonzales from Las Vegas, Nevada, also represented Team USA but faced a narrow defeat in a 3-2 decision against Slovakia’s Andrej Csemez.
The tournament will see two more US contenders enter the ring tomorrow: Shera Mae Patricio from Waianae, Hawaii, and Jamar Talley from Camden, New Jersey.
A contingent of eight boxers landed in Italy under the banner of Team USA, all aiming to secure their spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, led by USA Boxing National Head Coach Billy Walsh from Colorado Springs, Colorado. The coaching roster is bolstered by Timothy Nolan, Chad Wigle, along with assistant coaches Adonis Frazier and Christine Lopez.
