Toro Promotions Inc. just hit the jackpot with their latest acquisition – the undefeated Nicaraguan featherweight sensation, Nilo Guerrero, Jr. (7-0, 6 KOs). They’ve wrapped him up in an exclusive promotional contract, signaling big things on the horizon.
Guerrero is riding the crest of a wave of Nicaraguan boxing talent. This Central American powerhouse has churned out 17 world champions, including the legendary Alexis Arguello and the soon-to-be Hall of Famer Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, not to mention tough nuts like Ricardo Mayorga and Rosendo Alvarez.
Speaking of Gonzalez (51-4, 41 KOs), he’s still a major player in the Panamanian boxing scene, alongside the likes of IBF Light Flyweight World Champion Felix “El Gemelo” Alvarado (39-4, 34 KOs) and former WBC Flyweight World Champion Cristofer “El Latigo” Rosales (36-6, 22 KOs).
But back to Guerrero. This guy’s got a backstory that reads like a boxer’s dream. He snagged the Nicaraguan Youth National Flyweight Title back in 2016 and has duked it out in 150 amateur fights, many on the international stage. And get this – he stands a towering 6’ 2”, dwarfing the average featherweight by a good seven inches.
Whit Haydon, the co-promoter, can’t help but marvel at Guerrero’s unique blend of height and agility. “He’s a gangly guy at 6’ 2” who moves like he’s 5’ 2”,” Haydon says, comparing his style to the wild, unrestrained approach of Mayorga.
The 22-year-old made a smashing U.S. and Toro Promotions debut last Saturday at Emerald Queen Casino and Hotel in Tacoma, Washington. Guerrero put on a show, sending Chancellor Battenberg to the canvas twice before sealing the deal with a second-round technical knockout.
Circle February 15th in your calendars, folks! Guerrero is set to step back into the ring at Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California.
