Angelo Leo is ready to be ‘one step closer’ to title

Angelo Leo, with his sights locked on featherweight glory, is gearing up for his skirmish against Mike Plania. This showdown, set to light up ProBox TV’s Wednesday Night Fights on January 31 in Plant City, Florida, is a stepping stone in Leo’s march towards two-division world champ status.

Once ruling the roost in the super-bantamweight realm, Leo, alongside his sage, Miguel Leo (a.k.a. Dad), has set up shop in the neon-lit, high-stakes arena of Las Vegas, Nevada. The Leos, originally hailing from Albuquerque, took a detour through Los Angeles, only to find themselves gridlocked in traffic and emptying their wallets faster than a slot machine. Las Vegas, with its thriving boxing community, turned out to be the jackpot they were hunting for.

Chatting with ProBox TV, Leo reminisced about his nomadic journey. “Vegas was our second stop, LA was the first pitstop. We hung our gloves there for a few years, then scooted back to Albuquerque when I turned pro. After a while, we rolled the dice and landed in Vegas. Best roll of the dice, if you ask me.”

Perched at No. 9 in the WBA featherweight rankings, Leo sizes up Plania with a boxer’s eye. “Caught a glimpse of Mike in the ring; the guy’s dynamite with gloves. He’s a tough nut, no doubt,” Leo said. “He’s bounced around weight classes like a pinball—118, 122, even hit 130. Now he’s back at 126. Me? I’m just here to bag that win.”

For ‘El Chinito’, a 29-year-old pugilist with a tally of 22 wins, one setback, and 10 opponents KO’d, this isn’t just another bout. It’s a stride towards etching his name as a two-division world conqueror. “Eyeing that featherweight title, that’s the dream. Bag a belt in another weight class. First, take home the win on the 31st, then let’s see what ProBox has up its sleeve for me.”
