In a historic move for Tijuana, Mexico’s TM Boxing, the promotional company signed an exclusive contract with Romanian amateur standout Cosmin-Petre Girleanu. Girleanu signed the contract late last month and will be traveling to Mexico later this month to make his pro debut before the end of the year.

Girleanu represented Romania in the 2020 Olympics held last summer because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Girleanu, a ten-time Romanian national amateur champion, was crowned champion at the World Junior amateur tournament in 2015 held in Russia. The same year he placed second at the European version in Lviv, Ukraine.

“We are very happy to add to our company a fighter with Cosmin’s experience and trajectory,” Eric Ibarra, TM Boxing’s President, stated. “At the same time, we would like to thank our great friend and Cosmin’s manager Antonela Maria Obreja for the confidence in us to develop Girleanu’s career together.”

Near the end of his amateur career, the 23-year-old won two medals, silver and bronze, at the senior European tournament.

“Girleanu is an exceptional talent and the fact he is an Olympian only proves it,” Felipe Leon, TM Boxing’s Fighter Relations Director, said. “Because he is a flyweight, it is harder for him to find competition in Europe and that is why he is making the move to Mexico to develop since in this country arguably the best 112-pounders can be found. We expect a lot from Grileanu.”
