Teofimo Lopez, the former undisputed lightweight champion, has his sights set on an entirely different beast, Josh Taylor. In a recent interview with Fight Hub, Lopez said, “I feel like the Young takeover of 2018. that’s how I feel.”

Lopez spoke about his preparation leading up to the highly anticipated fight on June 10th. He’s been “well trained” and his plan is “well thought out.” His sparring has “been looking phenomenal” and he’s focusing on getting hit less and appearing as the best version of himself on fight day.

Tackling the Problem

According to Lopez, he and his coach, his father, managed to figure out a problem that was giving him issues. “We just went back to the drawing board and we figured out what was the issue,” he said. However, he kept the specifics of the issue to himself, stating, “Yeah, that’s for us to know and for you guys to find out June 10th.”

Overcoming the Noise

The critics and naysayers don’t seem to faze him. “I use it as fuel,” he explained. He’s aware of the speculation surrounding his performance, but he seems to thrive on it, expressing that he feeds off the anticipation of what he can do in the ring.

Aiming for the Top

The fight with Josh Taylor is being seen as a fight to solidify who is number one at 140 pounds. Despite Taylor giving up a majority of his belts, Lopez still holds him in high regard, expressing respect for Taylor’s past achievements. “He holds the Ring magazine which is the number one solidifying person at that weight that it basically identifies as the champion of champions and um that’s what we’re fighting for for this fight,” he said.

Unyielding Ambition

When asked about his long-term goal in the 140-pound division, Lopez was clear: “The goal is still in there if not if um you know it’s just hard man it’s hard.” He believes that after his performance against Josh Taylor, many fighters, even the champions, might be hesitant to face him.

Taylor’s Challenge

When asked about what challenges Taylor could present in the upcoming fight, Lopez was unfazed. He expressed nothing but confidence, stating, “Nothing. You’re not confident, huh? Yeah, I remember yeah when I went out you guys are all gonna be surprised but I’m just gonna be like I’ve been here before. I’ve done this.”

A Controversial Statement

In a previous interview, Lopez had raised eyebrows by mentioning that he wants to “kill” Josh Taylor. When asked to clarify this comment, Lopez explained, “I don’t mean it in a disrespectful way. When I say I want to ‘kill’ him, it’s just a figure of speech. I’m talking about the intensity, the motivation. I’m not going to take it lightly.”

Lopez is determined to come out victorious on June 10th and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that. From honing his training to meticulously studying his opponent, Lopez is preparing for the fight of his life.
