Olympian Alex Winwood begins professional boxing career with Main Event on debut

Mandurah-bred Olympian Alex Winwood’s amateur boxing apprenticeship is done, with the 25-year-old to make his long-awaited professional debut in Perth later this month.

After devastating calls from officials cruelled his dreams of winning Olympic and Commonwealth Games glory for his nation, Winwood has ended his amateur career after nearly 60 fights.

Despite giving up his Olympic dreams, Winwood’s ambitions have only increased.

Instead of easing his way onto the circuit, the light flyweight will slug it out with Indonesian boxer Mario Bando, who has already collected four knockout victories across six bouts and has only lost on split decision.

The bout will be the Main Event of Thunderdome 40, The Thunderdome boxing series is a breeding ground for many of Australia’s elite boxers.
