Rising junior welterweight contender Kenneth Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) is looking to end the year in victorious fashion. He will close out 2022 with a televised bout on December 17 in Minneapolis, Minn., against an opponent to be named.
Sims, a Christmas baby, was hoping to get a title shot for Christmas but he continues to be avoided by highly ranked fighters in his 140-pound weight division. A former amateur standout, Sims is on a five-bout winning streak reaching back to 2019. He upset the highly regarded Elvis Rodriguez in May of 2021 and was hoping to capitalize on that momentum.
Despite he and his team’s best efforts to get significant names in the ring with Sims, they haven’t been keen to face off with the surging Sims.
“I’ve tried calling them out. I’ve been offered a few opponents that then refused to fight me. I’ve realized they are going to have to be forced to fight me. That may mean working my way in to a mandatory position and continuing to press the issue,” Sims said. “I think those fighters know that I’m capable of beating them and they don’t want to take that chance.”
Sims scored his 17th professional victory on his 28th birthday, defeating the previously undefeated Keeshawn Williams on Christmas day in 2021. He made his 2022 debut in August, scoring a fifth round TKO over Cristian Ruben Mino to win the WBA Intercontinental junior welterweight belt.
He had hoped to be much more active in 2022 but will now turn his focus to fighting more often in the new year once he handles business on December 17.
“In 2023, I want to get more fights in and I hope to finally get one of the top guys in the ring with me to prove to the world that I’m one of the best myself,” Sims added.”
He began training camp for his December 17 bout in early November, starting his training in the San Diego area.
