This year is vastly becoming a year for big fights to be made, yet it’s a smaller “local” card that warrants attention, nestled in between Wilder vs Fury 2 and Mikey Garcia vs Jessie Vargas late in February promising young talent make their 2020 debuts. On February 28th a prospect heavy Garcia Promotions card returns to the Southern Junction Night club with a potential 9 fight card headlined by former Top Rank/TMT lightweight Saul “Neno” Rodriguez.
Garcia Promotions and SWEAT Boxing and Training seem have to dug into its niche in the Metroplex boxing community bringing pro boxing back to Irving for the 4th time in a calendar year while slowly building a much needed following and platform for some of the areas most promising fighters.
Southern Junction Night Club located at 101 N. Rogers Rd. Irving, Texas 75061 has provided a perfect backdrop as the large venue has provided an amazing atmosphere with a full bar, delicious food and a deep Texas feel for fight fans to enjoy offering excellent views of the action from any seat in the crowd.
while the venue, sponsors, men and woman behind the scenes help bring the events together the action and attention will be in the ring as many of the area up and coming talent showcase talents for the first time this year. A potential night of 9 fights should move swiftly so make sure to show up early with doors opening at 6pm with first bell at 7PM sharp.
Oscar Alan Perez fighting out of Houston, Texas begins the night of fights in a 4 round lightweight contest against Louisiana product Richard Manning (0-2).
Shurretta Metcalf (8-3-1,2ko) battles an opponent to be named and looks to improve on a career best 2019 that saw the rising Super Bantamweight win all 4 of her bouts. These wins have put her in a very desirable position atop the national rankings as she looks for a potential title opportunity down the road.
McKinney, Texas Product Jordan Jones (4-0) looks to continue his win streak making his third appearance at Southern Junction against Fort Worth southpaw Benjamin Gurment (1-0-1,1ko) in a 4 round Super Lightweight bout. Gurment comes in off a tough spirited October draw against Darius Bagley while Jones coming in following a unanimous decision victory in late September against Andre Murray. This looks to be an intriguing bout, mixing styles between both fighters, the all similar in size but should mesh well in the ring.
Grand Prairie standout Marco Vasquez (5-1,2ko) continues his comeback after a 3-year layoff taking on Lamar Bolden (0-2) in a 4 round Middleweight contest. Vasquez at 23 years old, is a 5-year veteran who took a long layoff after a May 2015 loss to Jon Bullock. He returned last year picking up 2 decision victories while showing maturity in and out of the ring. At 6’2” he has great size and is someone to keep an eye on down the road.
Hoping to make a appearance on the card is San Antonio born Roberto Rodriguez (7-0.3ko) fighting out of Garcia Boxing gym in Riverside, California. The 20-yard old has been moved fast picking up 5 wins last year and looks to make his first 6 round appearance against a foe to be named in the Bantamweight division.
Also looking to make his return to Southern Junction is Breenan Rhyes Macias (6-0-2,4ko) out of Goodyear, Arizona in a 6 round Bantamweight bout against a to be determined opponent. Macias is a high-volume exciting fighter who has picked up 2 straight knockout wins following 2 disputed draws and a clean sweep unanimous decision in his 2019 campaign.
Dallas prospect Angel Alejandro (8-0,4ko) opens his 2020 campaign taking on 21 fight veteran Darryl Hayes (7-14,1ko) Super Featherweight battle. Hayes has made a career fighting top notch prospects in Texas as his opponents have a combined record of 61-30-7 record that includes 7 undefeated fighters. Alejandro has traveled the United States following his August 2017 debut in Tijuana, at age 20 he is being pushed fast fighting 4 times last year that included a November decision victory over Mark John Yap at the MGM undercard for the Wilder vs Ortiz rematch in Las Vegas. Look for big things out of Alejandro as he moves up the PBC food chain of young exciting fighters.
In the co-main event slot making his Texas debut is Saul “Neno” Rodriguez (23-1-1,17ko) out of Riverside, California in an 8 round Lightweight contest against an opponent to be named shortly. Rodriguez looks to rebound from a tough 3rd round knockout loss to Miguel Angel Gonzalez this past June. He looks to shake off the loss and some cobwebs in his return while showing that the loss is just a bump on the road toward a world championship. At age 26, Rodriguez is just now entering what should be the prime of his career. he looked to be on the fast track toward a world championship but was slowed down fighting only once a year in 3-year span. He is a fight with huge upside that is looking to showcase in front of a huge Texas crowd on the eve of Garcia vs Vargas.
Headlining a prospect loaded card is Rafael “Listo” Gaitan (5-0-1,3ko) fighting out of Grand Prairie, Texas in a 6 round Light Heavyweight contest against 25 fight veteran Dennis Williams (7-14-1,4ko) out of Monroe, Louisiana. At 21 years old, Listo has already found a niche in the local fight scene receiving support from sponsors and fight fans in the form of tickets sold, as a Garcia Promotions fighter he headlined the last Southern Junction card going 6 full rounds as a professional for the first time as he drew against Colombian veteran Neller Obregon in November. Williams is riding a 2-fight winning streak while remaining active with a 5 fight 2019. He comes in fresh off a 1st round knockout over 45-win veteran Fred Ladd just a few weeks ago. He should prove to be a good test for Gaitan having only been stopped twice in his 22-fight career.
All in all, a potential night of great fireworks looks to line up smoothly showcasing the hard effort that Garcia Promotions and SWEAT Boxing Gym have put into promoting some of the metroplexes best young talent. Boxing fans can expect surprises, giveaways, guest appearances, music, food, and drink while being entertained with the glory of those fighting within the ropes.
