Freddie Roach’s Ringside Take: Views on Inoue, Pacquiao, More

Legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach, in a recent interview with fighthype.com, shared his insights on the boxing scene, ranging from his thoughts on the comparisons between “Monster” Naoya Inoue and Manny Pacquiao, to his predictions for his fighter, Giovanni Cabrera.

When asked about Inoue, Roach did not hold back his praise for the formidable fighter, even entertaining the idea of him facing Manny Pacquiao.

“I expect you guys to have him with the Monster because he is a great puncher. To put them together would be something I would dream about. I think it would be a great fight.”

Roach acknowledges the different stages of both fighters’ careers, with Pacquiao’s career in the twilight stage and Inoue’s on the rise. Yet, he expresses confidence in Pacquiao’s readiness for such a clash.

“He’s getting older. I think Pacquiao can still get ready for that.”

Comparison with Pacquiao

Roach doesn’t shy away from comparing Inoue with Pacquiao, citing both fighters’ distinct skills and styles. He considers Pacquiao a more complete fighter, but sees Inoue as a potent threat in the ring.

“One’s just a bit of a huge puncher, he goes out there, and he’s looking for the knockout. Pacquiao’s looking to outbox his opponents using quick footwork. I think Pacquiao is a more complete fighter, and Inoue is maybe a little bit more dangerous.”

While Inoue is a dominant force in his weight class, Roach prefers to reserve judgment on the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, pointing to the need to see the upcoming fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford.

“We still need to see that fight. But there’s too much difference in weight between the winner of this fight and Inoue.”

Prediction for Cabrera

Turning to his own fighter, Giovanni Cabrera, Roach seems upbeat despite acknowledging Cabrera’s underdog status against Isaac Cruz.

“It’s hard. But he did get in this like a match with him. He’s a lot bigger, and he has a long-range. I think he can win this fight.”

In Roach’s view, Cabrera’s size and reach could prove pivotal in this match-up.

“Thanks, and have a great fight week.”
