Light-Flyweight king pens deal with Eddie Hearn
Eddie Hearn and Matchroom are delighted to announce the signing of WBO World Light-Flyweight champion Elwin Soto.
Soto (18-1 12 KOs) ripped the WBO strap from Angel Acosta in dramatic fashion with a final round KO win in California in June 2019 and has since defended the title twice with distance triumphs over Edward Heno in October 2019 and Carlos Butrago last October.
The 24 year old will be back in action soon with his first fight under Hearn to be announced shortly, and the young Mexican talent cannot wait to be back in the ring and wants to chase his fellow champions.
“I want to thank Eddie Hearn from Matchroom and Zanfer for this great opportunity,” said Soto. “I’m very excited to announce my next defense and then going on to unify the division.”
“I am delighted to welcome another Mexican World champion to the roster in Elwin Soto,” said Hearn. “His World title win over Acosta was a dramatic fairytale moment, and this young man is really growing into being a World champion.
“We know that the smaller weight classes always guarantee exciting fights, and I can’t wait to see Elwin continue his journey to the biggest fights at Light-Flyweight and above, starting very soon.”
David Light Calls out WBO World champion Lawrence Okolie
WBO Oriental Cruiserweight Champion David Light has called out the newly crowned WBO World Cruiserweight champion from England, Lawrence Okolie.
29 year old David Light who successfully defended his WBO Oriental title in December last year against Mose Auimatagi Jnr, is currently ranked 6th in WBO, 6th in IBF, 14th in WBC and 16th on Boxrec. David first called out Lawrence Okolie on TV4, has called him out again during the recent P3 Promotions event during the break from the action.
David has admitted to being frustrated seeing all his stablemates from Peach Boxing being incredibly active over the last 2 years with Covid putting David career on hold. But it has inspired David to get a big fight and make him hungrier than he has ever been before.
David Light got ranked in the top 15 of WBO when he fought and won the WBO Oriental title against two-times world title challenger Mark Flanagan. This being the biggest win of David Lights career to date. David Light steadily increase his rankings after having wins over Mexican German Garcia Montes and New Zealander Lance Bryant. The two big jumps in the rankings came from victories over former world title challenger Trent Broadhurst and top-ranked New Zealander Mose Auimatagi Jnr. That’s what got him in the position of where David is now. David is just one big win away from becoming mandatory challenger, however, he doesn’t want to wait, he is calling out the World Champion now.
WBO World Cruiserweight Champion, from London England, 28 year old Lawrence Okolie, only just won the vacant title against polish boxer Krzysztof Glowacki. Lawrence got the luxury of hometown advantage, winning the title by knockout at Wembley Arena.
Since Lawrence has just won the title, some major changes to the WBO rankings will be happening in the cruiserweight division. This will of course put David up at least two spots, but, the question is who will WBO give the first ranked position two is up to debate. It could either be David Light with him being more active in the top 5, Dilan Prasovic who is ranked 3rd or Murat Gassiev who is ranked 4th. It is less likely to be Krzysztof Glowacki who now come off two losses in a row which was both World title fights.
One thing for sure is that it is time for Isaac Peach to get negotiating with Eddie Hearn to try to get this fight happening.
