In the midst of swirling rumors and speculations around the potential fight between Canelo and Badou Jack, Boxing King Media had the pleasure of speaking with Amer Abdallah, Head of Boxing at Skill Challenge Entertainment.
Canelo vs Jack
Amer Abdallah “I spoke to Eddie here in the last week and I suggested it to him,” Abdallah started, clearly excited. “To my surprise, he said that he actually mentioned that fight – Canelo versus Badou Jack – to Prince Khalid.”
Prince Khalid, a notable figure in the world of boxing, holds a long-time relationship with Eddie Hearn, who Abdallah implied had also shown interest in this fight. “They’ve worked together in making certain fights happen,” Abdallah added.
“We have 90% of the terms agreed to, it’s just the remaining one or two items, and I think the weight is going to be the issue here.”
Abdallah shared how he’s been in direct contact with Canelo’s team, trying to get a clearer picture of the situation. The one hurdle in this potential matchup seemed to be the weight. “Canelo’s a living legend, an icon in boxing,” Abdallah explained. “He wants to jump up to cruiserweight. The financial terms are agreed upon, the date is agreed upon. But the weight… that’s where the sticking part was.”
Abdallah reflected on the complexities of weight classifications, emphasizing that they might need to check in with Mauricio Sulaimán, the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC). He expressed: “If you are looking to fight for a cruiserweight title, then you can’t have a guy drop 30 pounds, 40 pounds, so you could fight for a title at a different weight class.”
Canelo’s Prospective Inclusion in Skill Challenge
On a related note, when asked if Canelo could join the star-studded cast of the Skill Challenge fighters, Abdallah hinted at a potential multi-fight deal. “Everything’s open. We’re very interested in signing a multi-fight deal with Canelo,” he revealed. “Of course, it could happen, depending on what direction we want to take.”
Abdallah further dropped hints about their next move. When asked about their next signing announcement, he shared, “It’ll be in June. It will be soon.”
Clearing the Air About the £150 Million Rumour
The interview took a turn as Abdallah addressed rumors about Frank Warren and Derek Chisora’s £150 million fight. Abdallah unequivocally dismissed any financial offer made regarding this fight. “Any number that’s out there is baseless,” he declared, adding that any suggestion of such an offer was untrue.
The potential Canelo vs Badou Jack fight, the possible multi-fight deal with Canelo, and the forthcoming signing announcement in June — there’s a lot in store for boxing enthusiasts!
